Course Catalog Description

Approaches to literary study, including textual analysis, scholarly methodology and bibliography, critical theory and practice.

Class Description

This course introduces students entering the English Department’s Ph.D. program to the practice of scholarly writing, with an emphasis on three core aspects of the literary critical enterprise: textual criticism and editing, production and reception, and interpretation and recent debates over method. Students will be required to produce three papers that correspond to each of the above practices -- revising one of these papers into a conference presentation (at the end of the semester). Our readings will correspond theoretically to the issues raised in each textual exercise.
