Course Catalog Description

Designed primarily to permit the instructors to deal with a topic with which they are especially concerned, more focused than the subject matter of a regular lecture course. See department website for topics. Does not count towards the requirements of the History major or minor, but may satisfy other campus requirements.

Class Description

This class will be taught via ASYNCHRONOUS REMOTE INSTRUCTION. Time conflicts are allowed for this class. This course offers a multidimensional approach to the study of female perpetrators of genocide. Students will examine case studies of females’ roles as mass murderers, killers, and instigators of genocide. We will also scrutinize how female violence is discussed in popular society and how violent women are often framed as mothers, monsters, or whores instead of competent killers. Lastly, we will discuss how women perpetrators of genocide have fared in national and international trials. Instructor bio: Dr. Alexis Herr is a lecturer in the Jewish Studies department at San Francisco State University, and has been a professor of holocaust and genocide studies at Keene State College. During her Pearl Resnick Postdoctoral Fellow at the Joseph and Morton Mandel Center for Advanced Holocaust Studies in 2016 Professor Herr worked on her project, “Italian Perpetrators on the Periphery of Genocide”. She received her PhD from Clark University in 2014. Dr. Herr is the author of The Holocaust and Compensated Compliance in Italy: Fossoli di Carpi, 1942-1952 (New York: Palgrave Macmillan, 2016). Her articles include, “False Heroes and The Holocaust: Disputing the ‘Brava Gente,’” published in The Jewish Week, July 2013.
