Course Catalog Description
Investigation of topics in Italian cultural history from a multidisciplinary perspective.
Class Description
Focusing on the original fascism – Italy’s – our seminar will be designed to address three areas. First, the question of origins and interpretation: what gave rise to fascism (World War I? economics?), and what was it (a cult? a revolution? a political philosophy?). Second, we will explore the ‘cultural turn’ in studies of Italian fascism (including works by Ben-Ghiat, Burdett, Falasca-Zamponi, Fogu, and Stone). Third, we will turn to recent debates over monuments and other traces of fascism in Italy today.
