Course Catalog Description
Advanced seminar in Asian American Studies with topics to be announced at the beginning of each semester.
Class Description
Prevailing cultural representations portray Asian Americans and African Americans in diametrically dissimilar ways. Asians Americans are often viewed as a “model minority” while African Americans are frequently criminalized and regarded as a social “problem.” This seminar will examine the historical and contemporary patterns of this differential racialization and how they have structured the types and overall tenor of relations between Asian Americans and African Americans. In doing so, we will address how groups of color can be complicit in the oppression of other groups of color, and the promise and prospects for multiracial collaborations to transform the existing racial order.
