Course Catalog Description
Course examines current problems and issues in the field of public policy. Topics may vary from year to year and will be announced at the beginning of the semester. Open to students from other departments.
Class Description
The COVID-19 pandemic has created economic circumstances unlike anything we have ever seen before. Policymakers are forced to improvise to design policies appropriate to the moment. This course will review the impact of the pandemic on the economy and the policy responses, focusing on the effects on families and workers. We will consider a range of policies, including paid leave, furloughs, shelter-in-place orders, unemployment insurance enhancements, unconditional cash payments, and fiscal relief for state and local governments. For each, we will consider the problem to which it was responding, its suitability to that problem, alternatives that might have been considered, and the evidence about its efficacy. We will discuss what lessons, if any, the experience of 2020 has for economic policy going forward.
