Course Catalog Description

Did you know that our closest living fish relative can build a cocoon and hibernate for three years? Or that some fish make a living by eating scales? This class will conduct publishable research in evolution, ecology, and behavior by doing actual science on fishes. We will attempt to answer unknown questions about the evolution of fascinating adaptations in diverse groups of fishes in both the laboratory and field.

Class Notes

Hybrid instruction: the only in-person component will be two optional field trips to collect fishes at local field sites. Students will primarily meet synchronously over zoom with the instructor in small groups every week to complete independent research projects (online data collection and analysis of morphological, behavioral, or genomic diversity of fishes). Asynchronous lectures and readings from the primary literature will be provided to supplement each group’s research interests. show less
