Study of the form and content of fictional narratives. Definition and techniques including voice, point of view, and time orders. Attention to cultural and historical contexts of selected narratives to consider interplay of works, authors, and readerships.

This course considers the theories of digital media, the dominant fiction form of our time. We will try to understand the very possibility to analyze our contemporary digital landscape, whose automized processes have decisively destabilized perceived ways of cognition and critical reflection.

Drawing on scholarship in material and cultural histories of computing, media archaeology, software and platform studies, race/ethnicity/gender and digital culture, theories of free or immaterial labor, digital media analysis, transnational and memetic digital practice, the course mixes theoretical material with empirically oriented studies with authors from Giles Deleuze and Alexander Galloway to Wendy Chun and Lisa Nakamura. We will focus particularly on the relation between rhetorical, social, political, and cultural contexts and the development of methods, ideas, practices, tools, and objects within digital studies.
