Course Catalog Description
This course focuses on a selected set of the major health policy issues and uses economics to uncover and better understand the issues. The course examines the scope for government intervention in health markets.
Class Description
This course introduces economic concepts and frameworks for analyzing healthcare markets and policy so you can understand and engage critically with contemporary debates. We will learn how healthcare markets work and when they fail; the scope and impact of government policy and regulation; how health technology and innovation are priced and evaluated; and how different healthcare systems are financed and organized. The focus is on core frameworks that help you engage with current and future policy challenges.
Class Notes
It is recommended that students have already taken quantitative policy courses such as Introduction to Health Policy and Management (PBHLTH 150D) or Introduction to Public Policy (PUBPOL 101), or have a sound quantitative coursework foundation.
