Course Catalog Description
This series covers current topics of research interest in design. The course content may vary semester to semester. Check with the department for current term topics.
Class Description
This course provides real-world experience in the development of innovative and realistic
customer-driven engineered products with a focus on mechanical engineering systems with
realistic design and development constraints. Through a combination of project-based learning
and lectures, students will be introduced to developing innovative design concepts, concept
selection, feasibility studies, and product development life cycle. Wide range of topics relevant
to new product design and development, such as prototyping, teamwork, intellectual
properties, economic, societal, and environmental aspects will be discussed. The course will
include both individual and team assignments in the form of reports, oral presentation, as well
as a final team project. Due to the interdisciplinary nature of design in general, multidisciplinary
team learning is highly encouraged and innovative thinking is nurtured.
