In-depth knowledge of the French language and accuracy in its use are the goals of this course. A textbook and systematic exercises will be used to assist in the demanding task of translating, both from English to French and from French to English.

This upper-division course introduces students to the practice of translation between French and English. It draws on developments in the relatively recent discipline of ‘translation studies’ to develop students’ skills as translators. We will learn about methodologies of translation and have the chance to put them into practice as we translate both from French into English and from English into French. We will pay particular attention to the linguistic and cultural differences which typically pose problems for practicing translators. As we carry out the translation work, we will explore a range of methodological questions. For example, we will explore how the practice of translation varies according to the type of text being translated and the purpose of the translation. We will also explore how to make use of different tools and resources from dictionaries and databases to Generative AI. Students will come away from the course with a better understanding of what translation is and how to practice it but they will also find that it improves their French.
