Internal and external history of Scandinavian culture and civilization from the late 8th century through the 15th century. Readings and discussion in English.

Viking and Medieval Scandinavia explores the development of social structures, trade and economic systems, religion, political organization, culture, literature, and technology during the Viking Age and, to a lesser extent, the medieval period (c. 750–1500). Through readings and discussions of both translated primary sources and modern scholarship, we will examine these developments in the Scandinavian homelands of the Vikings as well as in the regions that were sought out and, in some cases, settled by Scandinavians during the Viking Age. Throughout, these developments will be situated within the broader historical trends of Europe and Western Asia.
