Course Catalog Description
This interdisciplinary studio course explores how contemporary art and disability studies intersect. Through lectures and readings, students engage with the history of disability justice and activism, depictions of disabilities in art, disability art theory, and the work of historical and contemporary artists with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and cognitive differences. The course considers intersectional representations of bodies, disability as identity, accessibility, interdependence, care work, medicine, and healing as a socio-political, cultural, and collective practice. Students connect critical theories with personal creative practice to develop self-directed projects grounded in lived experience, communal care, and solidarity.
