Class Description
This course explores how Spain confronts—or avoids—its colonial past in former territories such as the Americas, the Philippines, and Africa. Through literature, film, and historical texts, we will examine how the legacies of empire continue to shape Spanish national identity, political discourse, and cultural production. From glorified conquest to contested memory, we will trace the enduring “ghosts” of empire in Spain’s ongoing struggle to reckon with its colonial past. In doing so, we will consider how colonial histories have been represented, contested, and/or reimagined in Spanish cultural production.
