Class Description

Students will explore how film and television reflect and shape societal views on race, gender, sexuality, and class. Through historical and contemporary case studies of multiple genres from Latin American cinema, we will trace the evolution of representation, examining how power structures and cultural biases influence portrayals and audience perceptions. Students will engage with critical theory and media analysis to better understand the stakes of visibility, the politics of representation. In exploring feminine iconography in Latin America, we will delve into historical and contemporary artworks and film portrayals to understand how figures of feminine power were represented in precolonial and colonial times and how they resonate in modern artistic interpretations. This course will challenge students to analyze visual portrayals of unusual female figures, symbolism, and evolution across different artistic media, especially film, video art, and literature. Students will delve into textual and visual analysis methods, learning to read film sequences and interpret symbolic imagery closely. Writing assignments will increase in length and complexity as the semester progresses, allowing students to refine their abilities to craft clear, concise, and insightful arguments about cinema and its cultural implications.
