This is a special topics course that explores contemporary issues. The topic will vary from year to year. Examples of such topics may include business reporting, covering the election, covering an international conflict, or covering a major issue like reproductive rights. Regardless of the area of focus, this course format will remain the same: It will include readings and critical discussions on media coverage of the topic; analysis on the reporting efforts to cover stories within this topic; and discussion on the ethical dilemmas faced by reporters, the role they play in shaping the public’s understanding of this issue. A significant part of this class includes bringing in guest speakers who participated in key coverage of these events.

Introduction to modern graphics and data visualization in the age of misinformation and disappearing data sets. Geared to reporting, refining, and using data visualization in journalism and communication. Students will learn how to create graphic stories from data collection and analysis to full-scale interactive design using Excel, Datawrapper, and Flourish.

This course will run completely online over six weeks. Every week, there will be four (4) scheduled live Zoom sessions to attend, in addition to any outside reading or assignments.
