Course Catalog Description
Reading and discussion with Plant and Microbial Biology faculty on current research and topics in plant and microbial biology. Topics which may be discussed include microbial biology, plant genetics, plant development, plant pathology, agricultural biotechnology, and genetic engineering. Ideal for students who are considering a major in the Department of Plant and Microbial Biology. Enrollment is limited to 20 freshmen.
Class Description
This Freshman Seminar will provide an introduction to the UC Botanical Garden, one of the premier scientific botanical gardens in the world. The first sessions will introduce students to activities in the Garden, including research, conservation and working in a public garden. A visit will also occur to the University and Jepson Herbaria. Following the introductory sessions, the Garden Horticulture staff will discuss their particular sections (e.g., plants from Asia, South Africa, etc.) followed by a tour of that section, led by the respective horticulturists. You will also have an opportunity to hear from the horticultural staff about careers in a botanical garden and about the career paths followed by each of these staff members. Because the Garden is located in Strawberry Canyon, if you wish to enroll you will need to be able to take the 12:40 Hill line Bus from the Hearst Mining Circle to the Garden, and planning on returning to campus on the 2:00 Hill Line Bus.https://plantandmicrobiology.berkeley.edu/profile/feldman.
