Class Description

This course will delve into the historical context of Italian colonialism in Eritrea, a small country in East Africa, as well as the impacts it had on the natives. Colonialism has a big impact on the dynamics between different countries, and which countries are more powerful than others. Because of expansionist politics, a lot of countries are struggling to not only catch up with the rest of the world, but also have functioning governments and economies. Our aim is to look at the reasons why Italy chose to colonize the horn of Africa, how they did it, and what was the relationship between Italy and Eritrea like. We will not only examine colonialism from the European perspective but also the perspectives of Eritreans. Students will also explore the aftermath of the colonization and the cultural impact it left on the state.
