Course Catalog Description
To provide a broad survey of the literature and historiographical problems of the different fields in history.
Class Description
This seminar is a selective introduction to the history of Latin America and the Caribbean, c. 1400-1898. Our approach to the field will combine classic texts with new approaches to Black and Indigenous histories of the Americas, in part inspired by the overlapping fields of Atlantic History and Native American and Indigenous Studies. The goal is for students to build core knowledge, familiarize themselves with major debates in the field, and gain insights into promising new directions for future research. Topics include the following: social, cultural, environmental, and economic ramifications of "the conquest"; capitalism, labor, and the world system; gender, sexuality, race, and religion; Indigenous and African slaveries and the transatlantic slave trade; Brazil, Angola, and the South Atlantic system; and revolt and rebellion during the Age of Revolutions.
