Class Description
This course examines the relationships between warfare, collective memory, and the construction of identity in contemporary Asia. We employ an interdisciplinary approach that includes history, political science, sociology, literature and film studies to analyze how memories of war are preserved, interpreted, and contested. We also explore the role of memorials, museums, education, civil society organizations, and various forms of media in shaping public perceptions of past conflicts and possibilities for healing and reconciliation. Case studies include World War II, the Chinese Civil War, the Partition of India, and the Korean War.
