Course Catalog Description
This course offers a survey of modern German literary, cultural, and intellectual currents, as well as an introduction to argumentation and analysis. Students will examine numerous issues and questions central to defining the complexity of modern German culture. R5A satisfies the first half of the Reading and Composition requirement, and R5B satisfies the second half.
Class Description
In this course we will survey historical and contemporary fascist movements drawing primarily on examples from Germany and India, but also other regions, including Spain, Italy and Portugal. We will reflect on some of the general characteristics of far-right ultra-nationalist movements, while also learning how these movements manifested in fiction, film, radio and various other forms of pop-culture. Questions that will arise in the class are: how do fascists use cultural output like novels, poems and songs to achieve their ends? How can those same objects be used in resistance against fascism? What is fascism in a (post)digital age? Over the course of the semester students will work on developing critical reading and writing skills, through in-class workshops, a library tour, and assignments ranging from mini blog-posts to polished essays.
