In addition to class meetings, an extra assignment/research component will be added to the course to increase contact hours with students. Possible components include additional readings, outside-of-class research projects, and any other project which the instructor feels will add to the value of the course. This course explores the intersection of race and the history of U.S. foreign relations. It argues that one of the best ways to understand the position of Native American, African American, Asian diasporic, and Latinx populations in the United States today is to understand their varied entanglements, including conquest, colonization, exploitation and immigration, with the American empire. In the course, we will study specific instances in the long trajectory of American foreign relations from Native American expulsion from ancestral lands to more recent immigration debates. In addition to weekly readings and in-class exercises, students will be expected to produce by the end of the semester a 15-page original research paper that incorporates primary source documents.
