Course Catalog Description
Study and critical analysis of topics, research, and texts pertinent to environmental science, policy, and management. Different topics will be available each semester reflecting faculty and student interest.
Class Description
The goal of the course is to provide students with a greater understanding of public university administration and finance and the role of academic leadership, with UC Berkeley as our case study. Topics will include:
-What is the role of the university in society?
-The University org chart - who does what?
-How is the university funded, and how has this changed over time?
-The role of philanthropy and public-private partnerships
-Academic freedom and free speech
-Diversity, equity, and inclusion: what are our goals and how do we pursue them?
-Additional topics depending on student interest
The course will include a variety of readings and publicly available resources, and the instructor’s reflections after 6+ years as Dean.
