Class Description
Lindy Hop is an African American vernacular dance created in New York City during the
Harlem Renaissance. Danced to jazz music, its impact on American pop culture is extremely
significant. The Lindy Hop, like all swing dancing, is improvisational and done with partners
through social dancing.
In the Fall of 2004, Howard Chong resurrected a swing dancing club on campus called Lindy on
Sproul. Every Saturday afternoon, swing dancers from Berkeley and the Bay Area come
together to dance, learn, and teach. Since then, a community of dancers has grown, inspiring its
members and others to dance. Some of the Berkeley students started their own dance club while
others joined and led performance dancing. Whether it is dancing at venues, on stage, on the
street corners of San Francisco, at city festivals, or wherever there is music – these dancers
embrace dancing as a way of life and have inspired and continue to inspire many others to dance.
