Class Description
Come one, come all, and learn about the hazy-crazy-most-of-the-time-not-lazy-unless-we’re-talking-about-hippies-which-we-will-be world of ALTERNATIVE SUBCULTURES, or “the subcultures of alternative rock music” as I had to phrase it in the course title so as not to mislead or offend anyone. We will explore very well-charted terrain, the stuff your parents and maybe grandparents walked on, the stuff my dad was avoiding the mosh pit to in the ‘80s and the glitzy world of the club kid underground that charmed my mother. We’re talking about Punks, Goths, Mall Goths, Rivetheads, Metalheads, Emos, Hippies, Skinheads, Oi! (enjoyers?), the Mods, Grunge goblins and… whatever the state of affairs is these days in our hellish era of TikTok. The deep waters, the murky unknown. You'll attend lectures, read critical works, but most importantly attend site visits at real-deal club nights and venues to get a firsthand look at The Scene, past and present. Hey! Ho! Let’s go!
