Course Catalog Description
Lectures and discussion on the crafts and/or processes of writing in various genres including fiction, poetry, creative nonfiction, etc. Topics for reading and writing assignments vary semester to semester.
Class Description
This course will introduce students to the study of creative writing—fiction and poetry. Students will learn to talk critically about these forms and begin to feel comfortable and confident writing within these genres. Students will write a variety of exercises and more formal pieces. Class will be a combination of lecture/discussion and small in-class workshops where student work will be edited and critiqued by other students in the class.
Please note that the fiction we will be reading and writing in this class should work within the genre of psychological realism. That is, stories that belong to the (long and honorable) traditions of science fiction, fantasy, experimental fiction, etc. will not be accepted.
As well, the poetry you read and write for this class should reflect your own voice and time period, i.e.: it should sound contemporary (like something a person would say or write today), and contemporary poets very rarely use strict end rhyme, archaic language, etc.
In other words, we will read what's being written TODAY and you will be writing as if you were publishing TODAY. Come write with us!
