Class Description
The course will be based on the reading, translation, grammatical and philological analysis of Middle Egyptian funerary texts. Readings include spells of the ancient Egyptian Coffin Texts, Book of the Dead, and other texts from mortuary and magical contexts. A special focus will be on the issues of translation of magical texts; the students will be encouraged to compare and discuss different kind of modern translations in the main Western languages used in Egyptology (English, Italian, French and German) and how those translations very often mirror the etic view of the scholarly interpretations of the texts.
