Hours & Workload

1 to 4 hours of directed group study per week, and 2 to 8 hours of outside work hours per week.

Course Catalog Description

Written proposal must be approved by a faculty sponsor, who will serve as Instructor of Record. Seminars for the group study of selected topics, which will vary from semester to semester. Topics may be initiated by students.

Class Description

This semester-long course focuses on introducing students to essential data science skills in an interactive setting. As a DeCal student, you will learn every step of the data science lifecycle: from formulating a data-centric project idea, to extracting stories with exploratory data analysis, and finally creating and evaluating predictive models. Using your new skills and knowledge, you will have the opportunity to develop a project of your choosing with other undergraduate students under a DSS mentor. You will also be able to present your findings and final project at Berkeley’s semesterly Data Science Research Symposium.
