Course Catalog Description

Studio experience in analysis, policy advising, and implementation in an urban setting. Students will engage in group work for real clients (e.g., community-based organizations or local government agencies), culminating in a final report or proposal.

Class Description

This studio course provides an opportunity for UC Berkeley DCRP graduate and undergrad students to serve as co-researchers and mentors for local youth to improve physical/environmental, social, and educational conditions for youth and families experiencing homelessness in the City of Berkeley and regionally. The project will address multiple dimensions of unhoused youth and family’s lives, including access to safe and affordable transportation, healthcare, and housing. Using the nationally recognized Y-PLAN methodology, UC Berkeley students will partner with local classroom teachers in the Berkeley High School Public Service Pathway to co-design innovative and implementable solutions to improve current conditions and opportunities for students experiencing housing insecurity. Studio students will serve as mentors and will work collaboratively with regional and local leaders forming a powerful community of practice throughout the duration of the studio. The shared goal is to identify and address a range of social and environmental challenges and the solutions needed to improve the physical/environmental, social, and educational needs of youth and families facing homelessness and housing instability housing — with local specificity and ownership. As studio mentors, CP 268/190 students will engage in an estimated 15 hours of fieldwork (averaging 1.5 hours a week) over the course of the semester, working with high school students at the Public Service Pathway at Berkeley High School and local city leaders. Additional community and civic partners from regional and statewide offices will also be a part of this studio.
