Course Catalog Description

Introduction to the theory and practice of methods used in the organic chemistry laboratory. An emphasis is placed on the separation and purification of organic compounds. Techniques covered will include extraction, distillation, sublimation, recrystalization, and chromatography. Detailed discussions and applications of infrared and nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy will be included.

Co-enrollment or a previous passing grade in Chem 3A is required. The enrollment system will require this as Chem 3A is a co-requisite of Chem 3AL. Because of the co-requisite requirement, students will not be able to join the Chem 3AL waitlist unless they are enrolled in (not waitlisted for) Chem 3.. show more

Because of the co-requisite requirement, students will not be able to join the Chem 3AL waitlist unless they are enrolled in (not waitlisted for) Chem 3A, or have previously passed Chem 3A. Rules & Requirements

Requisites

  • CHEM 1A and CHEM 1AL with min grades of C-; or CHEM 4A with min grade of C-; or AP CHEM with min score of 4; or CHEM HL IB with min score of 5; or GCE A-Level CHEM with min grade of C. Corequisite: CHEM 3A with min grade of C- or coenrollment in CHEM 3A.

Credit Restrictions

Students will receive no credit for CHEM 3AL after taking CHEM 12A.

Repeat Rules

Course is not repeatable for credit.
