Course Catalog Description

Advanced seminar in Asian American Studies with topics to be announced at the beginning of each semester.

Class Description

This course investigates the relationship between religion and race for Pacific Islander communities through discussion of foundational books and articles in the field. We will focus on four related questions over the course of the quarter: How did religious conceptions of difference contribute to the development of the concept of “race” in the Pacific? How have assumptions about race shaped religious worldviews and practices? How has religion contributed to the construction of racial/ethnic communities in the Pacific? And how have ideas about religion and race contributed to notions of what it means to be Pacific Islander?
