Course Catalog Description

Special Topics courses offer students opportunities for more concentrated focus beyond general curriculum offerings. Courses may align with an instructor’s own research, they may propose topics responding to contemporary events and issues, or they may offer a specialized skill. Primarily intended for advanced undergraduates and graduates in Art Practice but open to others.

Class Description

This studio course explores Indigenous perspectives in two-dimensional media, such as painting, drawing, and beadwork, through an understanding of themes such as place, the body, adornment, and relations. Students will engage with the ways in which identity and lived experiences, through an Indigenous lens, shape artistic expression, reflecting on their own creative practices. The course encourages students to critically engage with the themes in their projects, pushing beyond technical proficiency to develop work grounded in personal narratives. The course provides an overview of the history of Indigenous art. It situates contemporary Indigenous artists within broader artistic traditions, fostering an understanding of the cultural contexts that influence their work. Although the course will focus on painting, drawing, and beadwork, students interested in other two-dimensional media can contact the instructor directly before registering. Prerequisite: Art 12 and/or Art 13 or equivalent
