Today’s context of uncertainty has rendered the Vitruvian firmitas as a thing of the past. Our ever-changing environment has brought forward the need for architectures that respond to constant flux and an unpredictable future. This seminar discusses the emergence of this condition and problematizes the instrumentalization of the concept of flexibility as the remedy towards open-ended, risk-free, and, allegedly, user empowering spaces. The sessions—organized around talks, readings and a research-by-design assignment—cast light on several paradigmatic case studies and construct an archaeology of flexible architectures, unveiling the term’s hidden complexities and paradoxes.
