Class Description
This interdisciplinary seminar explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, ethics, and the Arabic-speaking world, examining how cultural, political, and linguistic biases influence AI systems. Students will engage with classical ethical thought from Arab scholars alongside contemporary debates on fairness, accountability, and bias in machine learning. The course emphasizes challenges unique to Arabic language processing, such as translation, authorship, and underrepresentation in AI development, while also addressing broader issues of AI deployment in the Global South and conflict zones. Through critical readings, case studies, and hands-on projects, students will analyze real-world applications of AI, evaluate ethical implications, and propose solutions for building inclusive and culturally conscious technologies.
Prerequisites: Two years of Arabic language study (or equivalent) is required; basic knowledge of natural language processing (NLP) and machine learning is encouraged but not mandatory.
