Course Catalog Description

This course will focus on topics in national, transnational, and global cinema, television, photography, and/or new media.

Class Description

Aner Preminger, 2025–2026 Koret Visiting Professor in Israel Studies at the Helen Diller Institute; Associate Professor, Faculty of Social Sciences, The Hebrew University of Jerusalem; Professor, Department of Film and Television, Sapir Academic College This course explores the development of Israeli cinema throughout the 20th century, placing it in dialogue with international film history. It examines the work of influential figures such as Dziga Vertov, Jean-Luc Godard, and Krzysztof Kieslowski, alongside contemporary forms of social media. Students will study both experimental and popular films, considering a range of perspectives from diverse filmmakers engaged in Israeli cinema and media. The course will address how these works reflect and respond to social and political conflicts, emerging alliances, and communal solidarities. Special attention will be given to the local and specific impacts of cinema and media on society.
