Class Description
This course will give students an introduction to core principles, frameworks, and current debates in governing common pool resources in the ocean. We will apply foundational readings on environmental governance theory to ocean systems and develop skills for analyzing governance institutions that consider community-based management, market-based mechanisms, and government regulation. Topics will include marine protected areas, indigenous fisheries management, catch shares, climate change impacts, blue economy strategies, and integrated land-sea management. Students will explore case studies of ocean governance at global, national, and local scales.
