Group study of special topics in environmental science, policy, and management that are not covered in depth in regular courses in the department.

The polar regions have some of the most extreme climates on Earth, which have led to many unique evolutionary adaptations in the life that calls the poles home. Today, the North and South Poles are experiencing the fastest rate of global warming of any location on Earth. What makes the microbiology of the poles unique, how is it affected by climate change, and how can it respond? This course aims to answer these questions by focusing on one microbe and its relationship to climate change each week. Students will gain experience reading and discussing current scientific literature, a better understanding of core microbiology concepts, and an appreciation for the diversity of life. No prerequisites–all levels of biological and climate change knowledge are welcome!
