Course Catalog Description

Research-oriented and designed for upper-division English majors. Intensive examination of critical approaches, literary theory, or a special topic in literary and cultural studies. Topics vary from semester to semester. Students should consult the department's "Announcement of Classes" for offerings well before the beginning of the semester.

Class Description

Who is granted the authority to represent liminal lives to the reading public? What form is best suitable for representing those lives and which audiences are authorized to read and respond to matters of life and death? In this course, we will consider how a range of late-twentieth century/contemporary Chicanx, Latinx, and Spanish-language writers grapple with the representation of migration, community, and citizenship. In addition, we will address the role of the reader and the politics of empathy, critiques lobbied against the authenticity and authority of these works, and the debate about the usage of fiction in ongoing events. These conversations will take place accompanied by the work of literary scholars, theorists, and activists who are periodizing and shaping this field.
