Course Catalog Description
Research-oriented and designed for upper-division English majors. Intensive examination of critical approaches, literary theory, or a special topic in literary and cultural studies. Topics vary from semester to semester. Students should consult the department's "Announcement of Classes" for offerings well before the beginning of the semester.
Class Description
This course will focus on William Faulkner’s The Sound and the Fury (1929), Light in August (1932), Absalom, Absalom! (1936)—three extraordinary and experimental novels, all set in the same fictional location of Yoknapatawpha, Mississippi. Our seminar discussions will consider topics including narration and the representation of consciousness; modernism and the mythical method; and tragedy and the legacy of slavery. Student writing will be staged in a series of assignments in research and analysis, culminating in a long essay.
