Sophomore seminars are small interactive courses offered by faculty members in departments all across the campus. Sophomore seminars offer opportunity for close, regular intellectual contact between faculty members and students in the crucial second year. The topics vary from department to department and semester to semester. Enrollment limited to 15 sophomores.

We will consider the nature of space and time, especially in the
context of our understanding of the overall properties of the
Universe. The major topics from the following best-selling book
will be discussed: "A Briefer History of Time," by Stephen Hawking.
Our journey will take us through the basics of the two pillars of
modern physics: quantum mechanics and Einstein's general theory
of relativity. We will also explore string theory, which attempts
to unify these two great fields by postulating the existence of
many hidden dimensions in which packages of energy vibrate.
