Course focuses on race and ethnic relations in the United States. Examination of historical experiences, contemporary circumstances, and future prospects of racial and ethnic populations with particular attention to trends in relations between the dominant society and the African American, Native American, Asian American, and Latino subcultures. Political and social consequences of racial and ethnic stratification are explored.

Racemaking & Resistance: This course provides an introduction to a wide range of scholarship on race and ethnicity, tracing the sociohistorical construction of race in the United States from the colonial to contemporary period. Part 1 (“Black & White”) explores the relationship between race, slavery, and democracy in the United States. Part 2 (“Racial Amalgamations”) examines the historical construction of race through immigration enforcement and illegalization. Part 3 (“The Racialization of Indigeneity”) focuses on settler colonialism and its logic of elimination. In addition to approaches that emphasize the construction of race through these externally imposed forces, we explore how racial and ethnic identities are also forged through collective practices of resistance, solidarity, and community.

Credit Restrictions

Students will receive no credit for 131AC after taking 131 or 131A. Deficiency in 131 or 131A may be removed by 131AC.
