2 hours of instructor presentation of course materials per week, 6 hours of outside work hours per week, and 1 hours of the exchange of opinions or questions on course material per week.

An overview of topics and theories in language acquisition: early development of speech perception and production, word learning, generalizing linguistic structure, and differences between first language acquisition, second language acquisition, and bilingualism. We will also compare different theoretical approaches, and address the classic "nature vs. nurture" question by examining both traditional generativist approaches and more recent usage based models.

Class Notes

50% of seats are released at the beginning of Phase 1. All seats are reserved for Psych majors. There is no waitlist. Additional seats may be added to impacted classes (up to 15% more if needed).

More seats will be released during Phase 2, and the Psych Major enrollment restriction will be removed. A small waitlist will be added. A small percent of seats to be released.
