Course Catalog Description

Intro to core concepts, theories, and methodologies of sociolinguistics, one of the major subfields of contemporary linguistics. We will examine of how language reflects social characteristics and categories including age, gender, socioeconomic status, regional affiliation, race and ethnicity, individual and group identity, and style. Broad topics include multilingualism and language contact, regional linguistic differentiation (dialectology), language variation, language change, and language policy and planning.
