Course Catalog Description

To provide a broad survey of the literature and historiographical problems of the different fields in history.

Class Description

This seminar introduces students to historical scholarship on Latin America in the period since independence. Given the size and diversity of the region, it would be impossible to offer comprehensive coverage of the literature on modern Latin America in one semester, so our discussions will focus on a selection of key themes or subfields that are prominent in the scholarship today. This semester’s themes will include histories of race and citizenship, environmental history, gender history, and transnational and global history. Over the course of the semester, we will read a selection of books in each of these subfields that illustrate the variety of methodological approaches that scholars interested in these areas have taken to understanding and writing about the past. In our discussions, we will consider the advantages and limits of different approaches, and how trends in the scholarship have changed over time. Students joining us from other disciplines or geographic areas of expertise will be welcome to help us think comparatively about these themes across disciplinary and regional divides.
