Class Description
Every subculture has at its center some kind of text, whether it be a K-pop band’s oeuvre, a holy scripture, or a political figure’s slogans. Drawing on subcultural theories and conceptions of taste, this course explores how some films have become “cult” objects, producing specific subcultures and practices; how particular subcultures have been represented on film; and how certain subcultures have produced their own films. Rather than being a comprehensive exploration of cinema and subcultures, the emphasis will be on theorizing the relationship between subculture and textuality. In final research papers, students will explore the cinematic practices and/or representations of a particular subculture of their choice.
