Course Catalog Description
The Freshman Seminar Program has been designed to provide new students with the opportunity to explore an intellectual topic with a faculty member in a small-seminar setting. Freshman Seminars are offered in all campus departments, and topics may vary from department to department and semester to semester. Enrollment limited to fifteen freshman.
Class Description
Insects are the most diverse group of macroorganisms on the planet. They pollinate many cultivated plants, recycle organic materials, serve as sources of food, provide innumerate ecosystem services, and much more. Yet, insects are facing massing population declines across the globe. You will learn about the beauty of insects, why they are so important, and some of the threats these amazing creatures face.
Rodrigo Almeida is Professor of Ecology of Emerging Infectious Diseases; his research focuses on the ecology and management of insect-borne plant diseases. Rodrigo is fascinated by all things insects, and in Spring semesters he teaches Insects and Human Society (ESPM 40 https://nature.berkeley.edu/almeidalab/
