Course Catalog Description
Required of all Ph.D. students. Advanced study in various fields, leading to a substantial piece of writing. Offerings vary from semester to semester. Students should consult the department's "Announcement of Classes" for offerings well before the beginning of the semester.
Class Description
This graduate survey course examines various genres of nonfiction writing produced by Native American intellectuals from the nineteenth century through today: speeches, sermons, political tracts, autobiography, ethnography, journalism, essays, and docu-poetry. Many Native American writers produced works across genres. Readings will be accompanied by scholarly essays and discussions of methodologies in Native American and Indigenous studies. Authors include William Apess, E. Pauline Johnson, Zitkala-Ša, Charles Eastman, Luther Standing Bear, Laura Kellogg, Ella Deloria, Vine Deloria, Jr., Leslie Marmon Silko, Louise Erdrich, Deborah Miranda, and Leanne Simpson.
