Selected advanced topics in design innovation.

Class Description

This special topics course invites graduate students at the Jacobs Institute of Design Innovation to collaboratively shape the curriculum for a new, regularly offered, DEI in Design course. Through a co-creative process, students will engage in explorations of key themes such as ethical foundations in design, power dynamics, and the influence of technology on bias in design processes. The course addresses complexities related to accessibility, inclusivity, and universal design, and discussions will center on advocacy, activism, and the formulation of policies in design. Class sessions will include a mix of lectures, guest speakers, and discussion. Students will contribute to proposing delivery methods and content, collectively crafting a comprehensive syllabus that aims to redefine the boundaries of design education. Join us in this academic journey, where insights will contribute to shaping the future of design education at UC Berkeley and cultivating a more inclusive and socially aware design community.
