This course charts the political and cultural resonance of Zapatismo and the Zapatista Indigenous movement of Chiapas, Mexico. Through critical readings of Zapatista communiques and speeches, including texts, videos, audio, and other multimedia resources written about the EZLN and the Zapatista movement, the course will map in particular, the impact such concepts as “autonomy” and “autonomous organizing” have within the Zapatista movement. The course also discusses the theoretical and methodological invitations expressed by the Zapatistas through their Encuentros/encounters and direct engagements with Chicanos and other groups throughout the world. Forged out of thirty years of solidarity and face-to-face encounters between Chicanos and the Zapatistas, we explore, in particular, the emergence of Chicana/o urban Zapatismo in the United States. show less
