Course Catalog Description

The first semester of the second-year course in Ukrainian language and culture. A continuation of the introductory course, it presumes at least an elementary knowledge of Ukrainian. Designed for students with diverse language proficiencies, this course combines elements of the intermediate and advanced language instruction. Working with Ukrainian in authentic cultural contexts, students will develop their speaking, reading, writing, and listening skills and gain confidence in using Ukrainian in real-world situations. By the end of the course, students will improve their ability to read original Ukrainian texts, master basic communication in Ukrainian, and start navigating more complex topics in the real-world environment.

Class Description

This is the first in a two-semester sequence of Continuing Ukrainian. The purpose of this course is to further develop students' Ukrainian proficiency in all four language skills, using discussion, oral presentations, written assignments, and a variety of readings. The class will significantly expand the students’ active vocabulary, advance grammatical competence, and cultural and idiomatic awareness through a comprehensive development of language skills. The Continuing Ukrainian course teaches language with constant reference to film, music, literature, and other authentic materials to reinforce the link between language and culture and to engage intermediate and advanced speakers in their continued study of the Ukrainian language. By engaging in both independent and collaborative tasks that strengthen and enhance their primary communication abilities, learners will expand their current lexicon, enhance their grammatical precision, acquire the self-assurance to express themselves freely and direct group conversations, assume more accountability for the direction and speed of their language education, and confidently handle practical scenarios in the real world. Mode of instruction The course runs in-person (Berkeley campus) and online (synchronously via Zoom), and it allows increased interaction with the instructor and fellow students through various forums, discussion boards, and video conferencing.
