Class Description
With the innumerable threats to human well-being, our bodies are on the line. This class takes an embodied approach to research that goes beyond opinion and emotional reactivity toward critical response. We begin with our own body-minds and physical environments. We mine our personal histories for research questions that lead to an investigation of how we came to be who we are and know what (we think) we know. Beginning with writing exercises geared toward reflecting on yourself and/or your family, you will discover the broader social, cultural, political, economic, or spiritual context of your stories. An assortment of eclectic writing experiences will draw on a variety of readings (academic and popular), podcasts, films, performances, and everyday life. We will discuss the issues and themes at hand through a somatic lens: Whose bodies are at stake? Which bodies matter? What happens when we center the body in our analysis of seemingly disembodied texts?
